Should Batteries Be Recycled In the interest of environmental safety all batteries, including Nicad, Nimh and Lead Acid should be recycled and not thrown in areas such as ditches or garbage containers. When batteries are found in these locations a Hazmat team is called in for their removal at great expense to taxpayers. Automotive Type or Lead Acid Batteries are considered Hazardous Waste by Environment Canada. Amp Hour or Mah Ratings Amp Hour (AH) or Milli Amp Hour (MAH) is a way of measuring battery capacity the same as fluid is measured in gallons or liters. If the AH or MAH rating on your replacement battery is different than that of the original battery, then the replacement battery has more or less capacity. Battery Storage Batteries will naturally lose there charge if they are not in use. Automotive, RV, Marine etc. type batteries will become damaged by sulphation if left in a discharged state. When storing these types of batteries, connecting an automatic battery charger or battery maintainer will extend the life of your battery. Battery Terminal Corrosion If your vehicle has corrosion build up on the battery terminals chances are you have the wrong type of battery in you vehicle. Late model vehicle charging systems are designed to charge at higher rates to allow for more demanding accessories in today's vehicles. Batteries made with cast lead plates generate more heat in these applications causing the battery to boil internally and gas threw the battery service caps, corroding terminals and shortening battery life. A battery manufactured with calcium grid plates (True Maintenance Free) is designed to handle higher charging rates. What Will Solar Panels Run Solar Panels or Solar Modules are used for charging batteries like a vehicles alternator or a home plug in style charger, The larger or more solar panels you have the greater the charging amperage.
